Gold rush letters, 1849-1850.

The letters from Daniel Gilman to his family describe the events of the sea voyage to California by way of Rio de Janeiro, Talcahuano, and Concepción, life in San Francisco, and conditions in California. The last letter to his parents tells of Moses's death and his own financial situation. Moses's letter, dated March 1850 from Havana, describes his passage to Panama, the town of Havana, his arrival at Chagres and Panama, and his proposed journey to California on the bark Augusta.

Daniel H. Gilman was born in Maine in 1845. After serving in the Civil War, he received a law degree from Columbia College of Law in 1877 and practiced in New York City. After moving to Seattle in 1883, he helped to found the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway. The line ran from downtown Seattle to the western Cascade Mountains and was linked to the Canadian Pacific in Sumas, Washington; however, it never succeeded in crossing the Cascades, and control of the line was assumed by the Norther...
